RECOOOORD! 26.300 fans flocked to the best show ever

VIENNA (20 November 2018). – Once again, reality exceeded all expectations: the VIECC Vienna Comic Con and the VCA Vienna Challengers Arena 2018 were not only the best in their history, but also the most colorful, thematically broadest, largest, most visited and thus most successful of their kind that Austria has ever experienced. For two days last weekend (17 and 18 November), exactly 26,387 fans – from nerds and gamers to families – and a total of 390 exhibitors transformed the Messe Wien into the epicenter of pop culture. Right in the heart of it were countless international stars from film and television, ingenious comic artists, great cosplayers, esports titans, famous YouTubers and many more. Florian Schermann, Category Manager of the VIECC at organizer Reed Exhibitions, is thrilled: "Exhibitors, visitors, artists, media, everyone agrees: this was the best event so far and thus the #bestweekendoftheyear! This Con has set new standards in Austria, especially in terms of esports".

Up close and personal with Hollywood and Comic stars

The long and attractive film and TV industry guest list included stars such as Sylvester McCoy (Radagast in "The Hobbit"), John Noble (Lord of the Rings), David Morrisey (The Walking Dead), Sean Biggerstaff (Harry Potter), Andrew Scott (Sherlock) and many more. This year’s comic artist squad was led by Batman draughtsman, Neal Adams.

Cosplay winner from the Czech Republic

The VIECC 2018 also answered the question of who the best cosplayer is: Ali Cosplay from the Czech Republic won the Championship of Cosplay with the character Kel´Thuzard Star Lich from Heroes of The Storm. As winner, the VIECC will send him to Chicago on 23 March 2019 as a participant in the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay, the largest and most renowned cosplay competition in the world.

A new level of quality has been set in the esports sector with the VCA in Austria. For the first time, the VCA was the official tour stop of the Riot Games League of Legends Premier Tour, where the best gamers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland battled each other. The prize money of over 25.000 Euros and immeasurably valuable points for the European ranking were collected by the German team “mouseports”, which won the finale on Sunday against “SK Gaming” with a 3:0 score.

However, it wasn't just on the mega stage where things were heating up. The esports event of the year also offered free-to-play areas, streamers & YouTubers from the gaming scene, exciting tournaments such as Super Smash Bros, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Tekken 7 as well as Rainbow Six victories by Ubisoft, played on the Microsoft Xbox One X.

YouTube’s Finest: Influencer Video Con presented by spark7

In addition to the VIECC and the VCA, another Con could be visited last weekend. Numerous YouTube and social media stars such as Marcus & Martinus, Chaosflo44, Celine Blogsta and Lisa from cutelifehacks.de were welcomed live on stage by the screams and storms of enthusiasm from their youthful fan audience during the Viennese tour stop of the Influencer VideoCon.

Highlights en masse

The premiere of the Cosplay Contest Kids, which allowed children from 2 to 15 years to show off their skills, was also a great success. More than 220 artists presented their hand-drawn individual pieces on the Artist Alley, and hundreds of fan groups presented fascinating props and demonstrations on the large show floor. The Optimus Prime Truck from HASBRO, parked in the middle of the Hall D, offered a lot of fun and action. A total of seven stages and workshop rooms and much more rounded off this brilliant weekend.
